When My Ship Comes In

That's what my dad would always say when we'd ask for something beyond the budget...When my ship comes in. Six people living on his income as a cement truck driver. We had everything we needed. Today that life style would be considered spartan. In a way, dad's ship did come in. He had a strong Teamster's pension, which continues to provide well for my mother, 19 years after dad is dead and gone.

I'm reminded by this card that when my own budget feels pinched that mostly we make our own ship. We live in a different world from any of the generations that went before us. Computers, telephones, microwaves, movie players, cup holders and what fills them in cars...we neither knew of nor needed these things. If my budget is short I need only look around me to see where my ship went.
