Unrequited Love

Daily Draw: Ancient Feminine Wisdom ~ Echo

Echo loved Narcissus, who only loved himself and his own reflection. Both faded to nothing because their type of love was an unhealthy addiction.

I'm reminded by this card of the crush I had for many years on one of my big brother's friends. I look back now and can see how it could certainly have been called an addiction. I turned down a lot of nice young men in my blindness, wasted a lot of good weekends, hoping and dreaming. Interesting, I never thought of it that way before. I recognize now that pining way for love of someone who will never return the feelings is an immature trait. They become creatures of perfection which no one else can measure up to and the whole non-relationship becomes a fantasy, impossible to fulfill in a healthy way. We became friends much later and that was much nicer anyway.

"Friendship is certainly the finest balm for the pangs of disappointed love." ~ Jane Austen 1775 - 1817
