Daily Draw: Paulina Tarot ~ 4 of Wands

I'm at the farm today looking out my big window at both fresh mown grass surrounded by ancient fir, oak, and cedar, and twenty acres of lush green hay nearly ready for cutting and baling. In this spot no one exists but me. A soft fine spring rain is just beginning which will nurture all.

I'm reminded by this card and view how much I love this place and how unexpectedly it came to be in my hands. Indeed, a sanctuary.

"The whole value of solitude depends upon one's self; it may be a sanctuary or a prison, a haven of repose or a place of punishment, a heaven or a hell, as we ourselves make it." ~ John Lubbock 1834-1913

Decline or Accept

Daily Draw: Paulina Tarot ~ 3 of Coins

Have you ever been invited to help someone else decorate their Christmas tree? It is an odd feeling, like writing with the non-dominant hand, or wearing shoes on the wrong feet.

I'm reminded by this card and this tree, sometimes the honor is in the invitation and it is ok to decline the joint projects. But it won't kill us to pitch in.

"The truth is our finest moments are likely to occur when we are feeling uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts." ~ M. Scott Peck 1936-2005

Winged And Ready

Daily Draw: Paulina Tarot ~ Page of Coins

New job, new project, new class, fresh ideas, the Page is the student of life and this Page is alert and ready to tackle all challenges.

I'm reminded by this card and my age that I'm occasionally prone to balk at the prospect of beginning again. Then the sheer excitement of learning something new kicks in and with my winged petasos settled firmly off I go again.

"I wake expectant, hoping to see a new thing." ~ Annie Dillard 1945-

Dark Horse

Daily Draw: Paulina Tarot ~ Queen of Swords

This Queen appears cloaked in and surrounded by doomiest gloom. Her attendant creatures seem sly and sneaky and fully untrustworthy. This is me yesterday and there didn't seem to be anything I could do to shake it.

I'm reminded by this card to start earlier and work harder to prevent a duplicate of yesterday. I recognize that gloom, it comes riding the dark horse called depression.

"Out of damp and gloomy days, out of solitude, out of loveless words directed at us, conclusions grow up in us like fungus: one morning they are there, we know not how, and they gaze upon us, morose and gray. Woe to the thinker who is not the gardener but only the soil of the plants that grow in him." ~ Friedrich Nietzsche 1844-1900

All Seeing

Daily Draw: Lord of the Rings Tarot ~ 7 of Cups

There were only three palantiri still in use and only seven in existence during the time we know as Middle-Earth, today there are billions...known as email/text/tweet/follow.

I'm reminded by this card being in the know about everything everywhere is no better than knowing nothing, information overload paralyzes the ability to choose wisely.

"He who looks in the crystal ball ends up eating glass, ... They're way, way close." ~ Mary Matalin 1953-

River of Time

Daily Draw: Lord of the Rings Tarot ~ King of Cups

Gimli's father Gloin and Thorin were companions and cohorts back in the mists of time, now Thorin and Gimli connect to work toward another common goal.

I'm reminded by this card of my mother and father's friends and how as an adult I too connected with some of them as equals and friends. One of the beauties of being an adult, the age differences that rule our childhood just drop away.

"Life is partly what we make it, and partly what it is made by the friends we choose." ~ Tennessee Williams 1911-1983

Daily Draw: Lord of the Rings Tarot ~ Justice

The Oathbreakers of Dunharrow, an interesting choice for Justice.

I'm reminded by this card of stubbornness, narrow-sightedness, and how just being deeply involved in something will make us oblivious to the right thing to do.

"A point of view can be a dangerous luxury when substituted for insight and understanding." ~ Marshall McLuhan 1911-1980

Daily Draw: Lords of the Rings Tarot ~ 3 of Wands

Knowing Merry and Pippin have been abducted by Orcs is much like realizing a friend has been sucked into meth or any other addiction. It will be tough to get them back or for that relationship to pick up where it left off; they will be changed by the journey.

I'm reminded by this card of dear friends who've gone to the dark side and never returned.

"I have lost friends, some by death... others through sheer inability to cross the street." ~ Virginia Woolf 1882-1941

Dearly Beloved

Daily Draw: Lord of the Rings Tarot ~ 2 of Cups

My draw is at the tail end of my day for a change, a day filled with love. The love of a friend for her Nordstrom shoes. The love of chips and salsa. The love for our little green Evening Grosbeaks.

I'm reminded by this card love covers a lot of territory and while we can occasionally love too much to the point of overwhelming the thing or person we love...it is truly an endless fountain. There is always room for more love in our lives, both the giving and the receiving.

"You don't have to go looking for love when it's where you come from." ~ Werner Erhard 1935-

At What Cost?

Daily Draw: Lord of the Rings Tarot ~ 5 of Cups

What was gained and at what cost? The fellowship has traversed the Mines of Moria and lived to tell the tale, no small feat, but the cost was immense as Gandalf the Grey has fallen into the abyss.

I'm reminded by Gandalf's sacrifice when we see something performed flawlessly it often seems like magic...how can anyone do something so well? What isn't seen in that painting or recital or healing is the years or decades that went into achieving that level of expertise. The magic is in us all. It takes work to wield it.

"I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain and treasure the most precious gift I have – life itself." ~ Walter Anderson

Kicked To The Curb

Daily Draw: Dürer Tarot ~ 10 of Swords

Ouch...but sometimes it takes this finality to recognize something is over, done, past, finito.

I'm reminded by my own past year, if I'm losing sleep over it, formulating arguments and shout-downs in my mind, saying things that diminish someone just to make myself feel like I've harmed them, repeating the litany of hurts/slights/faults/damage over and over...all that goes right back to my soul staining rage post. Who is being harmed with all this? Only me.
It feels so good to just let go and truly move on, scraping those burrs of 'can't possibly do anything about the past anyway' off the bottom of our shoes. The past is dead and gone. We need to kick that particular corpse to the curb, not pack the stinking thing along with us. If I can do it anyone can...

Hand Up

Daily Draw: Tarot of Dürer ~ Wheel

We've been down and not so down, not so down is better.

I'm reminded by this beautiful card of the people who put a hand out when the deep down hard times were upon us at various times over the years. This 1,500th tarot blog post is dedicated to saying thank you for the kindness that does still exist in the heart of so many individuals. It takes two hands reaching out; Seize the offered hand, seize the day.

"The difference between a helping hand and an outstretched palm is a twist of the wrist." ~ Laurence Leamer 1941-

Time To Come Home

Daily Draw: Durer Tarot ~ Knight of Cups

Whew. Almost too much information here. His exuberance is clear, but is it good news or drink that fuels it? It isn't running in fear that moves him, he isn't wearing a helmet nor is his sword drawn. And what have they done to that horses tail? I'm studying the 15-1600's and King John and James, their relationship with the Welsh, the life of a subscription soldier, and what really jumps out at me is the stump and the shield.

I'm reminded by the stump that any worthwhile effort is long gone to ash regardless of the hint of fresh bark remaining; by the cup on its side in the crest that any sustenance or courage has been drained, and by the sheep...well it speaks for itself. The time for the external soldier is over, it is time to look inward, take that energy and remake the life worth dying into a life worth living. Perhaps that is where our Knight is drawing his celebratory attitude from.

Befriend Myself

Daily Draw: Dürer Tarot ~ Ace of Cups

I've been looking at this cup and dove for the last hour and wondering if I'm a true friend to myself.

I'm reminded by this card I really need to work on that little conundrum.

"Movement is a medicine for creating change in a person's physical, emotional, and mental states." ~ Carol Welch

It Can't Touch Me

Daily Draw: Dürer Tarot ~ 10 of Coins

The usual figure, relaxed and comfortable on his lifetime of efforts, no worries. Except...that repel enemies fence is at least two stories high comparing it to the brick wall, and all his money is tied up in it.

I'm reminded by this card the world is a small place and there are few healthy nations and all the economies are tied to each other. Yes, it can and will touch me, already has. An economy based on printing money is false prosperity.

"Millions of the hard-working, thrifty people found that their life's savings would not buy a postage stamp or a loaf of bread." ~ Germany 1923

Daily Draw: Dürer Tarot ~ 5 of Wands

I know people who wouldn't own this deck because this image of conflict gives a first impression of animal cruelty. Given the time to both look and see, they would know the entire suit of Wands is dedicated to this king of the jungle. To my view this is a training exercise that has gone on too long and both partners are tired.

I'm reminded by this card I often see or create conflict where there is none, simply because I'm tired or cranky. For all I know it might even be a common human trait. Time to take a break, do something else, trade places.

"Conflict is the gadfly of thought. It stirs us to observation and memory. It instigates to invention. It shocks us out of sheeplike passivity, and sets us at noting and contriving." ~ John Dewey 1859-1952

The deck this week is one of Lo Scarabeo's most beautiful historical art decks, basing the tarot on the allegorical style of Albrecth Dürer (1471-1528). Wands feature lions, Swords the fox, Cups the white dove, Coins an eagle. Published 2002.

Internal Vigilance

Daily Draw: Da Vinci Tarot ~ Page of Swords
Dimmi: What do I have to watch out for?

This query perhaps depends on whether I accent the have or the for. Which ever, the book recommends eternal vigilance which suits this Page.

I'm reminded by this Page of our fragility and optimism. Against all odds we hope this town will be different, this job will be different, this promise will be kept. We allow the environment to let us down because we forget to remember past actions for and against and by us...which allows the same mistakes to be repeated. We don't need to carry a grudge, or feel defeated, but we do need to learn from experience before we can move on or up.

"The most vigilant self-criticism of course is necessary, but the time comes when the artist must tell himself he is good or he will go under." "~ Gerald Moor 1889-1987

Daily Draw: Da Vinci Enigma Tarot ~ Ace of Swords
Dimmi: What are your intentions?

The Swords suit is offered as Air in this deck, and what a wonderful Ace this is, so exemplary of how sometimes our intent for our day is swallowed up in wafting this way and that. If you sat down to draw Air what would it look like?

I'm reminded by this card of my day so far. I was thrown off kilter because blogger was down and my card is my first agenda item every day. My housekeeping intent is to work on a transformation of my office space into meditation/reading/yoga space but I keep finding myself in the kitchen scrubbing at something or other. However this day pans out it won't be as I intended, but it will still be a day in a life well spent.

"Be intent upon the perfection of the present day." ~ William Law 1686-1761

Daily Draw: Da Vinci Tarot ~ Wheel
Dimmi: Where are you moving closer to your destiny?

Ahhh...the author assumes fate is the dealer of our life cards, I say balderdash, our thoughts and actions drive our course of days. If fate rules there is absolutely no reason for a thinking brain.

I'm reminded by this card of Da Vinci's drive and skills, the need to make use of what he was given, to leave a legacy by making his own destiny.

"The legacy we leave is not just in our possessions, but in the quality of our lives. The greatest waste in all of our earth, which cannot be recycled or reclaimed, is our waste of the time that God has given us each day." ~ Billy Graham 1918-

Clever Strategy

Daily Draw: Da Vinci Enigma Tarot ~ 9 of Wands
Dimmi: What trouble are you expecting? How can you deal with it?

Brilliant, I wonder if this idea was ever put to use. I'm not expecting any trouble from any direction except the usual suspect, the economy. If I told you how many businesses Rob has worked for that have gone out of business you wouldn't believe me.

I'm reminded by this card I'm always ready for hard times. Our needs are small and we have zero debt. I'll face it head on without fear.

"The trouble with most people is that they think with their hopes or fears or wishes rather than with their minds." ~ Nancy Witcher Astor 1879-1964

Daily Draw: Da Vinci Enigma Tarot ~ Page of Wands
Dimmi: What kindles your enthusiasm or passion?

Knowledge. I love learning new things and that information always branches out in new ways. Given the income and time I'd be one of those lifer college students.

I'm reminded by this card if we keep our eyes, heart, and mind open there is knowledge to be gleaned and passion to be pursued every day.

"None are so old as those who have outlived enthusiasm." ~ Henry David Thoreau 1817-1862

Daily Draw: Da Vinci Enigma Tarot ~ 9 of Swords
Dimmi: What do you fear? Do you flee or fight?

I'm afraid of nothing but mankind.
I flee nothing but mankind.

Labor Turned Inward

Daily Draw: Da Vinci Enigma Tarot ~ 8 of Coins
Dimmi: Where are your skills needed?

Twenty-two figures of the human form at labor. Even includes one leaning on his shovel, we've all seen that...but there are times we do need to stop and reconnoiter what we've already done, see if we need to alter our methods, and to feed our sense of accomplishment.

I'm reminded by these figures of a nursing class I took this week. It turned out to include a section on my own disease. I thought I knew everything there was to know about it but I was wrong. And I've been depressed ever since. Somewhere deep in my heart I've hoped this one symptom was a medicine side effect that I had a choice over. No chance. No cure. So I'm leaning on my shovel thinking.

"Some people confuse acceptance with apathy, but there's all the difference in the world. Apathy fails to distinguish between what can and what cannot be helped; acceptance makes that distinction. Apathy paralyzes the will-to-action; acceptance frees it by relieving it of impossible burdens." ~ Arthur Gordon 1804-1890

Want It Need It Have It Don't Want It

Daily Draw: Oracle of the Radiant Sun ~ Acquisition

Taurus ruled by the Sun in the 2nd House
Bull headed results, drive, and possessions.

All lined up together, the cards have stuck to a theme this week. I've never inherited anything, don't expect to, and my estate is destined for the local animal shelter. I'm not a shopper, own just one piece of good jewelry in my wedding ring, and have never had more than 15-20 changes of clothes to my name. So how does this week's card speak to or of me?

To be honest...I don't know :) Perhaps in a couple of months it will all come clear.

The thirst of riches, increases ever with the acquisition of it." ~ Laurence Sterne 1713-1768

Daily Draw: Oracle of the Radiant Sun ~ Empathy

Pisces ruled by the Moon in the 12th House
Empath, wears heart on sleeve
Great need for emotional security, tendency to addiction
Gifted with all around good taste, shy and spiritual

Empathy is why I mostly stick to the headlines and only read hard news. The stories of pedophilia, torture, rape, mass starvation in a world full of food...they throw my whole world off, I can't get away from the mental images. So I can truly understand this triad would need the safety net security base and lean toward compulsions or addictions.

I'm reminded by this card the world is full of evil, always has been. But used to be, you only heard about the evil in your own neighborhood. Time passed and the world got smaller and we learned the evil wasn't a one-of, these atrocities were common. Then the newspaper and internet ages were upon us and we found the world was drowning in evil...so much so that good seems like an aberration. Evil seems the norm and empaths must shield themselves with whatever tool they can find. What a shame because they could offer a path to the light for some of the harmed.

"When you start to develop your powers of empathy and imagination, the whole world opens up to you." ~ Susan Sarandon 1946-

Lasting Monuments

Daily Draw: Oracle of the Radiant Sun ~ Achievement

Capricorn ruled by the Sun in the 10th house
Practical ambitious organizer
With a life spirit to succeed
And leave lasting achievements.

Think this person would be an A personality perfectionist and need a hardy ego too? That is a lot of drive wrapped up in one person. I wish my companion book listed people whose birth fall in each card guideline. I think of someone like Henry Ford, Julia Morgan, Imhotep.

I'm reminded by this card, in the big picture practical can equal roughshod and ruthless. The life spirit to succeed means not getting sidetracked, staying focused on the big picture. Edison wouldn't make my list because his focus was on the creating rather than fulfilling his inventions potential. He dropped what he'd designed into someone else's lap. I will just snuff out like a light and be gone...which is fine by me but I can certainly be amazed and admiring of others.

"I don't want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it through not dying." ~ Woody Allen 1935-

Worldly Goods

Daily Draw: Oracle of the Radiant Sun ~ Ostentation

Taurus ruled by Saturn in the 2nd House
Acquisition of worldly things
combined with a determination to succeed
It is all about possessions

There are many parts to the 2nd house, or in tarot-speak, the suit of coins. Health, family, occupation, education, the land, buildings which can cover not just home but hospital, school, church, barn...it is a big suit. But this card is all about acquisition and the flaunting of same. The Hummer syndrome. Christian Louboutin mentality, McMansion vision, I'm a princess fantasy.

There isn't a thing wrong with the above if we are rich...rich as in we have so much money we don't even know how much we have. The problem is the true cost of spending above our income. Is our house paid for? Are the children's college tuitions fully funded? Is the Roth/401K fully funded? Insurance in place? Is there a minimum of six weeks income in a contingency fund? Are all the bills paid in full? At that point I'd say welcome to all the ostentation we like. We earned it. Except by the time we'd funded all of the above we've changed how we view, value, and think about money. On the way to becoming Ostentatious we've become surprisingly unpretentious and find our value is in security, window-dressing be damned. You'd be surprised to know which of your neighbors are millionaires. It probably isn't the one carrying a Hummer on her back.

"To give up pretensions is as blessed a relief as to get them gratified." ~ William James 1842-1910

Daily Draw: Oracle of the Radiant Sun ~ Fortune

Leo ruled by the Sun in the 5th House
With the drive to succeed
Using creativity to get life in order

It would surprise you to know I'm an optimist wouldn't it? Because I so often see the need for growth in the cards rather than resting on my laurels. So I use the daily card to remind me where to keep the hammer pounding. There would be no need for improvement if we/life were perfect, right? And how often is life perfect?

I'm reminded by this card sometimes it is. It might just be the day turning out perfect but that more depends on mood than actions. Sometimes though we can look around our heart mind and environment and say "I've done a good job, all is as right in my world as I can make it." That is what this card says today. I can accept that. It may implode next week but for however long this period of time lasts I can recognize the value or result of effort and just be.

"Am I reaching my potential, checklist. Am I learning? Serving? Achieving the required results? Do I change with grace? Can I manage conflict?" ~ Max De Pree

Daily Draw: Oracle of the Radiant Sun ~ Seduction

Pisces ruled by Jupiter in the 12th house
Imagination and sensitivity
Seeks wisdom and inner spiritual growth
Gains great satisfaction in helping others

This image is said to be Eve, who first was seduced by the serpent, ate of the apple of knowledge and in turn became the seducer of Adam in wanting to share the knowledge she'd gained.

For all the sorrow real knowledge has brought to the world, I still support Eve in her quest to be more than a simpleminded directionless character trapped in a doll house of perfection. Humans have never been nor ever will be advanced enough to appreciate that kind of life. Eve's bite didn't bring evil and pain upon our heads, it simply gave us the greatest gift of all. Choice. Every minute of every day we have the free choice to walk in the light, or crawl in the dark.

"Know well what leads you forward and what hold you back, and choose the path that leads to wisdom." ~ Prince Gautama Siddharta 563-483 BC

Soul Staining Rage

Daily Draw: Radiant Sun Oracle ~ Inheritance
Scorpio ruled by Saturn in the 8th house
Self-knowledge, self-mastery, control.

I've been struggling with an issue since last February, a problem that for the first time in my life put me in such a raving blind rage I could have killed someone, turned around and then done it again it would have felt so good. This week I've finally arrived at a point I can lay down the soul staining anger and walk away from it.

I'm reminded by the stunted tree in the foreground of self-knowledge denied
By the labyrinth of the circuitous path to self mastery
By the castle curtain of control. I cut the rage free yesterday. The river of life is long and wide, there are bigger better stones than this to carry.

"Just squeeze your rage up into a bitter little ball and release it at an appropriate time, like that day I hit the referee with the whiskey bottle." ~ Homer Simpson via Dan Castellaneta 1958-
