The Dress

Daily Draw: Thoth Tarot ~ The Aeon

This card isn't the christianized Judgement card of the Rider-Waite card reader, but goes far beyond, when we learn something that deeply changes our perception.  Everywhere we stopped yesterday someone would hold up their phone and ask excitedly "what color is this dress?" I can see why it has become a sensation, because it makes us wonder what else do/did we see wrong or reversed or at odds with the world; while we trod along through life secure in the knowledge we are right and They are misguided idiots.

I'm reminded by this card what an amazing yank this exercise has been to those who stopped to think on it, to those of us that clearly saw white and gold, who would have been unshakable in that perception. What will surprise us today if we are open minded?

"Every man feels that perception gives him an invincible belief of the existence of that which he perceives; and that this belief is not the effect of reasoning, but the immediate consequence of perception." ~ Thomas Reid 1710-1796

They Can't Help Cowering

Daily Draw: Thoth Tarot ~ 7 of Swords

Futility of resistance, disorder and opposition. Discouragement.

I had a mammogram a few days ago. The radiologist called me yesterday and wanted me to come back in today for another, when he could be there to talk to me. That can't be good can it?
We are on the road honeymooning, so he settled for an 8:30 Tuesday meeting. Stubby and stretch are cowering...

Daily Draw: Thoth Tarot ~ 10 of Coins

Everything on this card relates to Mercury. Why is over my head. But at the understandable base is wealth. Considerably more than needs require wealth. Which must be minded and monitored lest it disappear.

I'm reminded by this card the word wealth as related to tarot is a enormous umbrella covering our day to day work, rest, and health. Why is it that much of this is ill considered and squandered? We often work too hard, rest too little, only consider our bodies when we get the inevitable wake up call.

Shall or Shant?

Daily Draw: Thoth Tarot ~ Strength/Lust

This card is based on the Apocalypse of St. John and Revelations and as such includes just about everything except the proverbial kitchen sink.

I'm reminded by this card, today I'm allowed or directed to be boisterous. Shall I or shan't I?
Oddly enough, shant was first known in the 1600's, was a fairly popular word from the late 1930's to early 1950's. It's current popular usage is as a descriptor for an explosive bowel movement. Which brings us right back to Revelations.

Takes A Village

Daily Draw: Thoth Tarot ~ 3 of Cups

This card speaks of Persephone, Demeter, and Hades; the four months underworld and the return, accompanied by fertile spring. This Friday will mark five years of my own time in my own equivalent of a black underworld with fallow springs. I was no doubt close to the edge and only needed tipped to fall into the abyss of depression and it just happened the day of our 40th anniversary I got that push. Which sent me into a year of black rage. The second year I worked my way out of that rage, but into breast cancer, and yadayada through the rest of the hits that followed.

All that said, the upcoming anniversary is what triggered the (shocked) reminder of how long I've struggled with what some professionals label mental illness. In the last four months I have registered some improvement so perhaps what was once a 10 is now a 7. In this breaking spring, I too hope to realize fresh strong tendrils pulling me out of that black place and into the understanding arms of Persephone and Demeter. Bring it on...

"Demeter was the only one of the Greek goddesses who could truly empathize with the human experience of suffering and grief, having experienced it fully herself." ~

Creative Fire

Daily Draw: Thoth Tarot ~ Ace of Wands

Wow. Look at that energy, the root energy of the rest of the deck. The Crown or Kether of the carved Tree of Life.

I'm reminded by this card of natural force energy versus ordered procedures. I can do as I'm instructed, it is part of life, but left to my own devices on a subject or task my first steps might appear wildly impractical, radically opposite, hopelessly entangled. But the end result will always stand out from those arrived at in an orderly manner. Not better...but certainly not pack think.

Daily Draw: EartHeart Wisdom + Myth Magic Deck ~ Begin

Like the chicken and the egg query, is the fresh growth mostly digging into the earth for nutrients and stability, or do the roots only serve to promote the bud to the light.

I'm reminded by this card to begin anything new I need a stable base, otherwise I'd just tip over, overwhelmed.

There is stability in walking an uncertain path, because you never allow yourself to be misled by what you think you know." ~ A.J. Darkholme   Rise of the Morningstar

Daily Draw: EartHeart Wisdom + Myth Magic Cards ~ Explore

Can I say again how wonderful it is to be retired?
And how much paperwork there is to get retired?
And how important it is to pound pennies down rat holes long before?

All that in aid of saying one of the things we have time to do for the first time in our lives is Explore. Together. Wow. What a concept. Our 45th anniversary is the 27th. The first thing we are going to do is visit our friend Elle, but from there? We have so many choices! The roads go so many directions! And we have TIME! I'm reminded by this card of this post, sometimes the journey is only part of the point of going...

"Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time." ~ J. Lubbock 1834-1913

Daily Draw: EartHeart Wisdom + Myth Magic ~ Compassion

Like Artemis, Kuan Yin chose her path rather than  have a mission or life thrust upon her. She chose to work toward a goal of peace, also declining the further step to Buddha, remaining a Bodhisattva, immortal, seeker of wisdom on her own path.

I wonder as I travel my own path of becoming if I will ever achieve true compassion, for those political and religious world leaders who fan the flames for their own greed, who feed their children to the war machine generation after generation.  I'm reminded by this card, umm, I don't think so. Nope. Won't happen. Best I can promise is to be pleasant to those I meet today. People are pretty fun one to one, if you take a minute to engage them on that level.

"Long life, Beauty, Happiness, Status, is welcome, agreeable, pleasant, and hard to obtain in the world.
...Now, I tell you, these... things are not to be obtained by reason of prayers or wishes. If they were to be obtained by reason of prayers or wishes, who here would lack them? It's not fitting for the disciple of the noble ones who desires long life to pray for it or to delight in doing so. Instead, the disciple of the noble ones who desires long life should follow the path of practice leading to long life. In so doing, he will attain long life..." ~ Gautama Buddha 480 BCE - 400 BCE  Ittha Sutta, AN 5.43

Daily Draw: EartHeart Wisdom and Myth  Magic Cards ~ Essence

Let your true self be a gift to you and a gift back to the universe.
I don't know anyone who doesn't admire Mother Teresa. But given the opportunity would we follow in her footsteps? Are we willing to make the opportunity? Because I doubt her calling came to her, she saw the need and went to it.

I'm reminded by this card very few of us are willing to devote 24/7 effort to a cause that is beyond our own doorstep. And Mother Teresa was often cranky and crotchety and I bet she didn't brook much nonsense from her charges. We need to seek the middle ground and do what we can with what we've got.

"Ask not 'How many good things have you done in your life?' rather ask, 'How much love did you put into what you did?” ~ Mother Teresa 1910-1997

Daily Draw: EartHeart Wisdom + Myth & Magic Cards ~ Sigh

The songs that weave in and out of the trees.

We live on a knob 940 feet above sea level. We get wind, which often does more than sigh. I'm reminded by this card of the night wind in the forest of Douglas Fir on our property and the story of Heidi, who was first tormented by the noise, then came to to be comforted by it. Home has many sounds, the sighs and shrieks of wind in trees but one.

The trees bend to caress me
The shade hugs my heart" ~ Candy Polgar   Council of Entwives

Daily Draw: EartHeart Wisdom + Myth & Magic Cards ~ Illumination

Even people who say they abhor nature, give me city, teeming city, all city all the time, are still gifted and embraced by her. They can't not see Sun and Moon, rain washes the hard surfaces, nature's trees keep the air breathable in spite of their efforts otherwise.

I'm reminded by this card we all live on the same planet, what I do and what you do and what they do all leave its mark, we all enjoy the option of her bounty.

Daily Draw: EartHeart Wisdom + Myth and Magic Cards ~ Alchemy

The tempering of our internal metal and mettle begins at birth.

I'm reminded by this card metal can be bent and broken, mettle can turn to spinelessness. As an adult I have options every day to confirm or deny or redesign the real me.

And it stings you for your pains;
Grasp it like a man of mettle,
And it soft as silk remains." ~ Aaron Hill 1685-1750

Heavy Lifting

Eartheart Wisdom + Magic and Myth Cards ~ Strength

All my decks, both the keepers and the long goners have been used here on Quirkeries. The Tao Oracle being the exception until a few weeks ago; it was my personal meditation deck for many years, always on the big roll top desk upstairs where I practice my Spencerian script and write letters, real letters.

I don't know what made me decide to use it here, to expose it, and me even more than usual... but I did. And I'm still thinking on Too Much of Not Enough.  The Tao Oracle is gorgeous, and every single hexagram worth deep consideration, but it is also a harsh taskmaster, and for someone like me those hexagrams can tip to a darker place where there is no mercy or light.

So in consideration of my 2015 words of choice, Recognition and Reconciliation I am retiring the Tao as my desk deck and replacing it with the brighter affirmation art of Colorado artist Sue Lion to bring more light and lift into my life. Can't hurt...
Eartheart Wisdom and Magic & Myth, 30 cards each, which I've combined into one deck. Strength indeed...we need to do some of the heavy lifting to get to the light, I think these decks will help. Thank you Sue.

Daily Draw: Enchanted Tarot ~ King of Cups/Hearts

I like to think I'm always in the King of Hearts mode. In control of my emotions. It used to be true.

I'm reminded by this card we watched the Ice Age cartoon movies this week and twice I had to snuffle into a Kleenex. When did this wimp take over my body?

Daily Draw: Enchanted Tarot ~ 5 of Wands

Arguments. Hate 'em. Unlike classroom debates where each side goes at it from an intellectual point of view, arguments have triggers, hot spots, mad before I even get started points.

I'm reminded by this card of Facebook. I was late to the party so what seems radically uncivil to me seems everyday behavior to others. If my friends and I were  in a room together, we'd never flash placards about our religion or politics. We are too well mannered.
I don't make friend requests and there isn't a single person that I've approved a friend request from that I haven't known more than ten years, some as many as fifty. Only three or four are still in my feed. Seeing the religious and political signs they put up radically changed how I perceive them.
I knew before what their religious feelings were and which parties they supported, what I can't get past now is the in your face incivility of people I thought a lot better of. I use facebook for the quilting,.. and my blog for opinions. It has never been written for anyone but me.

Daily Draw: Enchanted Tarot ~ 6 of Wands

This card is strikingly close to the color of Pepto-Bismol.

I'm alive. I can live with that.

Daily Draw: Enchanted Tarot ~ Chariot

I'm to remain single minded single focused today. Concentrate on the goal and let nothing dissuade me.

I'm reminded by this card the first Tuesday is always a mom day but not today, I have the flu. Normally I'd be in the Pacifica galloping toward town by now.  Already worrying. Already tensed up. Maybe I'll lay down and a fresh idea will approach my mind rather than me going to it. Sometimes that is when the best ideas arrive, when least expected...goodnight.

Sin Eater

Daily Draw: Enchanted Tarot ~ Moon

The Moon sheds a tear because she and Night are blamed for much.
The child sheds a tear because she can only see the moat and raised drawbridge, and not the hill which provides easy access.

I'm reminded by this card life is often murky and ill lit, but perhaps it is because we hide from clarity that which we don't wish to claim. Leave it for the sin eater, not my problem. But like a black and white photo, Moon exposes as much as it hides, clarity is there if we look.

"When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in Black and white, you photograph their souls." ~ Ted Grant 1913-2006

Clean Slate

Daily Draw: Enchanted Tarot ~ 5 of Swords

We watched Foyle's War DVD Russian House episode last night. Russian POW's who had fought for the Germans were being shipped back to Russia. Where word was, the returnees were being immediately executed. One chose to step off a bridge instead, there where it was peaceful, beautiful, and he had a choice.

This card reminds me, even though I'm no longer in that deepest darkest place, I thought the scene was absolutely pure; had I been beside him I would have jumped too, just for the joy of the fall. 5's are about evolution. Each day we have an opportunity to chose. Today I choose the light.

"Break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean" ~ John Muir 1838-1914
